Biological and Emerging Technologies – Biometrics, with Focus on Gait Recognition

An overview of Biometrics (including face recognition, fingerprint, retina, DNA,etc) will be presented, with a focus on the most recent technology called Gait Recognition. Come and learn about them!

One of the most recent AI developments (News from China) is that Gait Recognition is being used to complement facial recognition in security and surveillance cameras.

This technology can identify people from up to 50 meters away, even with their back turned or face covered. It can fill a gap in facial recognition, which needs close-up, high-resolution images of a person’s face to work. Gait Recognition has received a lot of attention because it has the advantage of being unobtrusive, in that it does not require the person’s cooperation. Gait recognition identifies people based on a person’s unique walking pattern.

This seminar will also give an overview of Biometrics, which is the measurement and analysis of unique physical characteristics (such as fingerprint, face, DNA, iris, or retina recognition) or behavioral characteristics (gait or voice patterns) as a means of verifying personal identity.
