CASPA eLetter: No. 163, May 31, 2019
May 31, 2019

President's Words

Dear Members,

Contemporary computing systems are based primarily on von Neuman's architecture. Data is retrieved from memory, processed, and then stored back to memory. However, in today's big data processing and artificial intelligence applications, the speed gap between processor and memory computing is increasing no matter from cloud servers to local edge devices, creating a "memory wall" problem between memory and computers.

Data movement is becoming a bottleneck in the entire computing system. For example, recent study confirmed that data transfer energy between CPU and off-chip memory is about two orders of magnitude more than floating-point operations. Even though Moore’s law helps reduce total energy, moving data still dominates total power consumption.

This time, we will co-host with SEMI for our Summer Symposium. We are inviting industry experts and academic research scientists to share their vision and ideas from transistor devices to new computing systems to solve memory wall problems. We will be at SEMI’s Milpitas headquarter on July 13, 2019. The detailed agenda will be posted in the next eLetter. Please mark your calendar and we are looking forward to your participation.

Sincerely yours,

Danny Hua
President and Chairman, CASPA
