Talk Abstract:
On June 23, 2020 China launched the last satellite of the BeiDou 3 Navigation Satellite System (BDS). The satellite, was the 30th BDS-3 satellite and the 55th of the whole BeiDou satellite family. The launch marked the completion of the country’s domestically developed BeiDou constellation, one of four global navigation networks alongside with the United States’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo. Also, Google Inc. plans to create a satellite constellation of around 1000 satellites orbiting around the earth and covering around 75% of its surface. The company is making efforts to use a constellation of satellites to establish communication at places beyond the reach of existing wired and wireless networks. This webinar will cover satellite communications in general, discussing low earth orbit (LEO), medium earth orbit (MEO), and geosynchronous equatorial obits (GEO) satellites. It will also present Global Navigation Systems with emphasis on US GPS and China’s Beidou systems.
