Quantum Computing Overview, and Quantum Supremacy by Dr. William Kao

About this Event

This seminar will present an overview of Quantum Computing, explain what is quantum computing, how it works and what major companies like Google, IBM, Microsoft, Intel and D-waves are working on. It will also cover future Quantum computing applications.

Talk Abstract:

Last October 2019 Google Research and the University of California, Santa Barbara, officially announced that they became the first to achieve quantum supremacy. The company claims its quantum computer, which runs on a 54-qubit chip called Sycamore, took only 3 minutes and 20 seconds to calculate a problem that would take the world’s fastest computer 10,000 years to solve. This talk will present what is quantum computing, principal quantum effects including particle-wave duality, superposition, entanglement and tunneling. The talk will also cover what is quantum supremacy, and discuss current research being conducted by IBM, Google, Microsoft, Intel and D-Waves. Finally it will cover future quantum computing applications areas such as cryptography, large DBMS, nanotechnology, biology/medicine and material science..
